I use "jarrodlombardo" many places, of particular note at Flickr.
The only significant use of "jaberwockynmt" is at LJ and on AIM. I will likely change my AIM name when I change my LJ name. "jaberwocky" is already in use on AIM, so I would change to something else.
I currently only use "jaberwocky" on IRC and in the Enforcer forums.

Misc

I meant to post this last Wednesday. Then on Thursday I realised I hadn't posted it yet, so I added to it and promptly forgot to post it again. The same happened Friday. Today, I haven't added anything to it other than this intro, but I'm actually remembering to post it now.

Rather than going to Congress and trying to negotiate changes to the law that regulates such activities, the administration simply grabbed that authority for itself, saying, in effect, "Trust us: if you knew what we know about the threat, you'd be perfectly happy to have us do what we're doing." In other areas, like the holding of prisoners in Guantanamo and interrogation methods used there and in the Middle East, one can only quote Moynihan on an earlier era: "As fears of Communist conspiracies and German subversion mounted, it was the U.S. government's conduct that approached the illegal.

Based on the comments I received, I wasn't clear. When I said, "For those of you who might know what had me freaked, realise that this post is public and you shouldn't comment about things people put in filtered posts outside of similarly filtered posts." I meant it to be clear that it wasn't a filtered post I had written, but one someone else had written. I failed at this. Also, I figured some of you would have been l33t hax0rs enough to see that I haven't posted anything non-public in many days.

Anyway, to be clear:
The thing that freaked me out was something that somone else posted about. I'm not freaked now, and wasn't really when I went to sleep. It was an interesting experience to go through the emotions like that, so I thought I'd share without violating the other person's privacy.

Whistleblowers, Musical Animations, A New Icon

I read about the Supreme Court decision the other day but there wasn't a straightforward enough article to link to. No there is:
Stephen Kohn, chairman of National Whistleblower Center, said, "The ruling is a victory for every crooked politician in the United States." A person who burns a U.S. flag is protected from retaliation; a public employee who exposes waste, fraud and corruption can be fired, he said.

LJ Security

I'd like comments about the efficacy of the below ideas and also suggestions of things to add that I may have missed.
Many people have alternate journals because of some "secret" life or interest they have. These people want to keep their "secret" journals separate from their regular journals. I've been thinking about the security measures they can take, so I've written up this little guide to help them out.

As a journal owner, YOU control ALL access to the posts in your journal. Only those people you allow to read a post can read it. Only those posts you allow comments on can be commented on. You choose where and what information you post online. Many people seem to forget these concepts.

You CANNOT control other people's actions. Others can friend your journal at their will and you can't stop them (there is LJ banning, but it is complicated and I haven't researched it fully/carefully so I don't know what it can do for you). You lose most control over comments you leave in other journals: they can make your information public or delete it at their will. You can control the information others post in your journal though: you can screen, delete and freeze any comments in your journal.

So, if you really care about keeping your "secret" journal secret:
  1. Make all of the old posts and all of the future posts friends-only. Somewhere in the settings you can make friends-only the default behavior for the future, so you don't have to think about it again. You could have a "This journal is friends only" post that is public, but be very careful as any public information may give clues as to who you are.
  2. NEVER post a comment with your "secret" account in any journal that isn't another "secret" journal you trust unless the post is clearly marked (and secured) as a "secret" post in a regular journal you trust.
  3. Remove any information from your "secret" profile that could be linked to your other profile. Most of the "secret" journals I've seen have very sparse info on their profile pages; this makes it harder to link them with regular accounts. For stronger security, you could also unfriend any regular journals you have friended, but if there is no other public information out there to link you, you follow the above guidelines and you trust the person not to "out" you, keeping these should be safe.
The big thing to remember is that you control what information you give out, so if you only give out information to people you trust in locations that are reasonably secure, your info will stay as secure as the people and locations.

Off-hand, Poll, Bullshit, Memes

I decided to move my mouse to the left of the keyboard. It's frustrating, but I'm already much better at it than I was a few hours ago.

So, people want info about why I posted the poll the other day. A few days ago, I was having a discussion with someone and "lasting" came up. I said that ~45 minutes was usual for me. The person was shocked at my claim of such a long time as being usual (their experience was shorter). I decided that by polling all of you, we could all learn from it. The "average" question applied to the specific conversation I mentioned. The "shortest" and "longest" just seemed to follow from that.

The FCC has declared the word bullshit to be "presumptively profane."

Recently, conversing with two different people I'm getting to know, my usage of the word "useful" was questioned/considered unusual. When someone tells me something about themselves, I say it is "useful" information because it helps me understand the person, which can in turn be used to become closer friends and I could then more effectively help the friend or be helped by the friend in a time of need. I don't mean it in any sort of manipulative way.

LJ just changed the number of userpics paid users get. Every paid account now has 30 pics and gets extra for loyalty. Every three months that a person has been continuously a paid member, they get another userpic. They even did it retroactively, so I now have 38 userpics, which is awesome, since I had been thinking about new icon ideas but note being really serious about it because I didn't want to delete any of my existing ones.

I have a tenant. Woot. It's Sara, my de facto landlord. It's complicated, paperwork-wise, with her being the landlord and a sublettee, but good because we all already get along with her and now we don't need to put signs up around town to find someone.

Last night, [info]lalabob11 and I convinced Sara that she needs to get a LiveJournal account. She's having a hard time coming up with a good username, so for those of you who've met her, you should add some suggestions in the comments.

Living

In a friends journal, she talked about the possible "bird-flu pandemic." I left a comment which quotes part of her post:
It's hard not to be scared about a pandemic; it's hard not to be scared about dying. Reading about this stuff has changed the way I think. I used to imagine what things might be like years in the future. Now, I do not allow myself to think more than a few months ahead in the future, because there is always the thought in the back of my head that I may not have a future. Other people seem to not even think or worry about this at all, and quite frankly, I don't know how.

I'm much more afraid of being hit by a car when I walk to work than any theorized pandemic because being hit feels more likely and I can identify with the pain it might cause. Only once a pandemic is happening might I become afraid of it (e.g. my current, justifiable fear of AIDS).

I believe death happens and when it does, you have no idea. You completely stop being, therefore you can't feel bad about it having happened since you can't feel anything since you no longer exist. So, nothing to be afraid of with death. Fear of pain and suffering makes sense though. Those are experiences that you can remember.

The future being uncertain is one of the best reasons to think far ahead and dream. "Hope for the best; prepare for the worst" is an appropriate cliche. [info]phyxius's lj is titled "The fact that life has no meaning *is* the reason to live." Living in fear is no good to anyone. Make big plans and dream.
Inspired by [info]phyxius's title and my own words, I changed my journal title and am feeling a little preachy (but don't know how to direct that energy right now).

Mark Twain's Rules of Writing
I don't wholly agree with all of them, but there are things to be learned.

This is an awesome photo.

There were a huge number of comments to my post about touching the other day. I discovered that LJ starts collapsing comments at 50. I don't know how to make that number higher or circumvent the collapsing altogether yet. It shouldn't happen often (I don't think I've had over 50 comments in one post before), but it really pisses me off. (Update: I'm pissed at LJ collapsing comments, not the conversation or having so many comments.)

A crapton of people are doing this meme, so I figured you could respond to it too. I am NOT going to screen comments. If you want to respond but you don't want it publicly associated with you, email me.
If you had me alone...locked up in your house for twenty-four hours and I had to do whatever you wanted me to, what would you do with me?
I responded to the first few I saw, but then decided that putting my reply here would be better:
I'd have you do all of my laundry and help me clean/organize my room. If you are somewhat technically inclined, I'd have you help me with projects like building my dining room table or shelves in the laundry room. If I find you attractive, there might be "bouts of passion" between chores, but not necessarily.

CSS, Mashup Camp, "Lil Mell," and TSS

I got the IE css thing to work. I just had to add the below code snip to my pages. ieonly.css has the size overrides so the widths are correct. Non-IE browsers see it as a comment while IE parses the content between the if and endif.
<!--[if IE]>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://www.network-science.net/jarrod/ieonly.css" />
<![endif]-->

The reference for this IE feature is here.

IE fails it.

I've been messing with the style of my journal a lot. I've gotten it to look nearly exactly as I want it to. My CSS validates. I'd been doing all of my work in Firefox though. I looked at it in IE just a while ago and it's messed up. It seems in IE 75% + 24% = 102% instead of 99% like it should. Do any of you know a way to make one browser use one stylesheet and another browser use a different one?

People

I was thinking about it at work, so I went back and read the post from August 2004:
http://jaberwockynmt.livejournal.com/7843.html
The next two posts after it also talk about that random girl whose lj name and real name I don't remember. I notice that my person has changed considerably since then. There is some interesting stuff in those posts (though maybe not for anyone but me).

Lj is nice in that I can talk at, sometimes with, all of you. It's bad though, because sometimes I want to say things to an audience about immediate issues, but saying them and asking for advice would make the issues worse.

I just reread that last sentence. I sound like a drama whore. Don't give me any advice about whatever you think I am talking about in the previous paragraph.

Note: the first and second paragraphs of this post have nothing to do with eachother and were posted for totally different reasons.

Also, I forgot to mention in the last post, The Apartment won 5 Oscars in 1960, including Best Picture.

Next Entry

As I said in this support request, not having a next button when you hit a protected entry frustrates me. I went and learned some javascript and came up with the below monster link. It takes the URL of whatever entry you are looking at and goes to the next entry in that journal. I tried this on a bunch of different entries, some with weird modifiers, like thread IDs and cuts, so I think it works. Try it out and tell me if you have any problems.

LJ won't let me post the link here (I don't know why, but it doesn't like my href=). You can get the link from this page:
http://www.clanspum.net/~jarrod/NextEntry.html
I also made a "Previous Entry" link. It is also available on the above page.

[No Subject]

http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=529850
At the top of the permanent link page for any given entry, there is a link like this:
http://www.livejournal.com/go.bml?journal=exampleusername&itemid=202402&dir=next
It goes to the next entry in the journal.
If the user who clicked the link has permission to read the entry, it works, taking the user to http://www.livejournal.com/users/exampleuser/202702.html, or similar.
If the user who clicked the link doesn't have permission to view the entry, they get to a page with the same url, but with this as the body:
Error
You are not authorized to view this protected entry.

Why was it implemented like this? Knowing that there is a protected entry in the timeline of a journal can be useful to some creepy stalker types in some cases. Also, it is really aggravating when reading through a friend's journal and hitting this dead end. There is no next button on the page to take me to the next entry without me having seen this entry which the user's friend decided not to let him read for whatever reason.

I can see 2 useful fixes you guys should implement, one is really nice but difficult and the other should be simple but not quite as nice.

1) When a user clicks the go.bml?journal=exampleusername&itemid=202402&dir=next link, it could take the user to the next entry that the user HAS permission to read. This would partly alleviate the stalker thing (the stalkers could still use the calendar to discover protected entries) and it would also fix the dead end problem.

2) The simple, less good fix would be to add the prev and next to the error page. If I manually fix the itemid argument to go.bml, I know it works, so just put the links in whatever file the error message comes from.

Thanks,
Jarrod Lombardo

Buy.com still can't seem to get any of the camera I ordered. I shopped around some more and found a place that has them in stock and for $8 less. I ordered from them and canceled my Buy.com order. I really want the camera before my NJ trip in December at the latest and Buy.com might not have had any in time.

For those of you using the ljnotify thing I set up on the clan server, I changed the output a bunch today, making it much less verbose. You'll see the difference the next time your friends list changes. If anyone wants to be added to it or know more about it, look at this post: http://www.livejournal.com/users/jaberwockynmt/142229.html

Last night, [info]two_pi_r and I had an argument about comment emails. When I had a free account, I know I had it checked and working, but they seem to have changed the policy since then, disallowing Free accounts from using it:
Paid, Permanent, and Early Adopter accounts can also receive notifications for comments that they write, by selecting the "Receive copies of my own comments via e-mail" option. This option is disabled for Free accounts; however, email notifications for received comments is available to all account types.

Too many people I know haven't seen The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, which are widely recognized as being two of the best movies of all time. I think they're definitely some of the best movies I've seen (I've seen somewhere between 800 and 1200 movies in my lifetime). When do you want to see them? I'm free all nights except Wednesday and Friday nearly every week. (Arrangements to view The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and The Shawshank Redemption can also be made.)

http://www.di.fm now has a "All hit 70's - All Hits, All The Time!" channel through their partner SKY.fm. They seem to alternate between songs I know and ones I don't recognize; it's fun. It has been added to my playlist of DI.fm channels, which already included the Trance, Hard Dance, Goa, Hardcore and Mostly Classical channels.

A few weeks ago I was in the storeroom at work getting some CD cases to have at my desk (I have to burn CDs of things for my boss often) and noticed a nice mousepad with a gel wrist pad in there. Last week I went and got the mousepad and have been using it. When the weight of my arm is on the pad, it makes the mouse part of the pad curl up a bit, which makes the ball mouse I was using not work well unless I consciously push it down. I was just thinking, "This wouldn't be a problem if I had an optical mouse." I just went into the storeroom and there were two brand-new 5-button Logitech optical mice on a shelf. I switched my ball-mouse (it was a generic 5-button ball mouse) for one and now my mouse use is far more comfortable. I would rather it be a 7-button mouse like I have at home, but the 6th and 7th buttons are really just a luxury I usually forget I have anyway.

I just realized that LJBP could stand for LiveJournal Bill-ification Project just as easily as LiveJournal Beautification Project.

I didn't know there was a word for it until today, but the way I name my mp3 files is with CamelCase.

I also finally created my WikiPedia user page (I've had an account and been doing various edits for months now):

It will become more fleshed-out eventually.

I sometimes want to post inane things about stuff like bodily functions. I know you don't all want to see that. I'm gonna create a TMI filter for that sort of thing. Only I'll be able to see your answers, so don't feel weird about other people knowing that you want to read these sorts of things.

Nintendo is extra weird. It might make playing a FPS not feel boring and tedious to me though.

I bought a pedometer today. I'm leaving for NDK tonight at ~0000. I'll blog about it while I'm there. The pedometer is mainly for use at cons, so I can figure out roughly how much I walk/run around during them. Number of steps will be included in at least some of the posts.

I've often said the worst decision ever made by the federal government was to attack the Confederacy after they seceded. This is along a similar vein:

Bleh.

My INR was a 3.2 today, up from 1.3 a week ago. The goal is to stay between 2 and 3. My dosage will likely change yet again. There should be a message on the answering machine at home to that effect.

The other day I changed the robots setting for my journal from my sidekick. It totally fucked my "personal info" settings. I though it was all easily fixed yesterday when I went through and re-checked some boxes. I was wrong. It deleted all my interests. Grrr....
